Marijuana Growing
TWISTEDBITCH asked:

my ex is a huge pothead and will not quit. he smokes in his car and in his house where his children (3 year old twins) visit. im worried that the 3rd hand marijuana smoke can harm my children. I need some proof that it does so I can take him back to court. I dont want them anywhere near him but he has every weekend placement. Does anyone (someone who has an EDUCATION, not someone looking for a quick 2 points) have any logical points I can bring to court? or DCFS?

You can maybe talk to him about it and secretly record him while saying whatever he has to say about the topic. You can asked to come over for whatever reason and say you have to go to the bathroom, or wash your hands but really find the drug. Good luck!

It’s nice to see you’re not bitter.

Only first hand smoke, marijuana or tobacco, has any effect. That is it only affect the one smoking. Third hand smoke is complete non-sense. Third hand smoke is the hypothesis where a person inhales the smoke exhaled from another person and then exhales it for a third person to breathe. Since there’s no ‘middle’ person in your position you would be talking about second hand smoke. Guess what, also complete non-sense.
If you can prove he smokes around the kids that’s all you need. That would be a shame considering how harmless marijuana is. But it isn’t particularly responsible.

There is no evidence that 3rd hand marijuana smoke will harm them, but just mentioning “marijuana” and “children” in the same sentence seems to work well at making it look like a bad thing.

It won’t as long as your children do not breathe in the smoke as he blows it out, even that won’t do much. Marijuana is not all too harmful.

They’ve been researching this, and there are very recent articles showing evidence of third-hand smoke being damaging, *especially* to toddlers and young children. Here’s an example aired on NBC:

While this article is specific to tobacco, just smoking marijuana is enough to get him arrested, and I’d say it’s safe to assume that it has the same effects. 😉

well im know scientist but i smoke used to smoke weed an i know that he could definitely be hurting his children, they can get contact high. an getting a 3 year old high i think is enough to get him in trouble. i know i cant sit in aroom with friends when their smoking cuz its gets me high. even are dog sits behind the tv or scratches at the door when my friends smoke in the room he hates getting high. i mean thats enough to tell you i think. you were with him before you should know being around him when he smokes can get you high.
and yes the link the person has above me i have seen.
i know its about ciggaretes but 3rd hand smoke is 3rd hand smoke.

The article linked by an above user is talking about nicotine specifically, not smoke in general, so it is irrelevant to marijuana.

Honestly, marijuana is not a reason to ban your kids from their father, unless he is using it with them around or giving it to them.

if you want factual information on the risks of 3rd hand exposure, you need to go to the medical journals, not yahoo answers.

Go to the library and search PubMed or JAMA for articles about it – which will certainly hold up better in court than information from yahoo.

Even 2nd hand cannabis smoke is NOT harmful to children.

You should look into the research by Melanie Dreher. She went to Jamaica to study this exact thing, and found NO damage or adverse effects on the children when exposed to their mother’s 2nd hand cannabis smoke.

I suppose given the tone of your question, this isn’t the answer you were looking for.

And to the commenters saying tobacco and cannabis is the same, that’s like saying water and turpentine are the same, because they are both liquids. Cannabis is not related and not at all like tobacco, doesn’t have the same effects on the mind or body. The ONLY thing that makes them the same is that both CAN be smoked.
