Why is the FDA avoiding medicinal marijuana, it’s sold in pharmacies as a regular prescription?

Legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes?

Medicinal Marijuana
Joe B asked:

Insurance covers it like a regular prescription, but somehow it’s not a prescription?

Any prescription medicine MUST be FDA approved, the FDA is skirting this issue as more and more states legalize marijuana on the medicinal level, why?

THEY MAKE TOO MUCH MONEY OFF ALL THEIR OTHER DRUGS. THEY WOULD RATHER PRESCRIBE SOMEONE A 300 DOLLAR PRESCRIPTION OF OXYCONTIN TO EASE CANCER PAIN THAN GIVE THEM 30 DOLLARS WORTH OF WEED.

Generally it’s a corporation with a patent that submits to the FDA for approval.
I don’t believe anyone can have a patent on a plant (maybe a particular strain) and since you can grow it in your apartment closet between rounds of Halo 3, there isn’t much of a profit incentive.
And believe me, the FDA doesn’t deal with anything BUT profit.

Because the FDA requires that evidence be provided that the stuff is safe and is effective. The fact that none of the advocates can supply evidence of safety and effectiveness to the using standard scientific methodology should be a ‘red flag’ that that there is more hype than science in the claims.

Are you aware that a McDondalds hamburger has to pass stricter safety requirements than any ‘alternative medicine’ sold in the US?

No matter how much you like weed it’s still a drug. I don’t mind it myself, but that’s how it is. The FDA is not in the business of legalizing drugs especially since most people who are bosses at the DEA are against it. Marijuana has been illegal since 1937, before most people at the DEA were born. You can’t just make somebody change their mind overnight. And if you don’t understand still, you should probably cut down on the weed.

Medical marijuana is a state issue. In order to get approved by the FDA, there has to be rigorous testing. Marijuana isn’t legal federally so a federal agency can’t approve it. Just because Obama pledged to not allow the DEA to punish those in states with medicinal marijuana laws doesn’t mean he can’t.
