Cheers all! Edit: I just was doing some research about quartz nails to see
if you can really put them into a glass of water when they are red hot and
found out that it is a common misconception, only silica glass (fused
quartz) will withstand it because its thermal expansion coefficient is only
1/18th of what normal glass has.
“On the other hand, quartz has a thermal expansion coefficient that is only
slightly lower than that of ordinary glass and as you know no one in his
right mind will serve hot tea in a wine glass… if you heat up a crystal,
it will get more elongated. For a single, isolated crystal this doesn’t
matter too much, but in a crystal group the individuals will expand
differently in different directions, which might induce considerable
stress.”
