On August 17th, 2014 at 5:18AM I was sitting reminiscing over the past 15
years of cannabis activism in Canada. It was a big day for an old friend
and associate of mine, Marc Emery, who celebrated his release from US
federal custody after four years of imprisonment. It was a joyous occasion
for those of us in the community, and I was preparing for a celebration at
Victory Park later in the day.
As I was rolling my medicine for the festivities, I could not help but
remember how this mess started for the Marc and his wife Jodie. On July
29th, 2005, Marc was arrested and charged with “Conspiracy to Distribute
Marijuana”, “Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana Seeds” and “Conspiracy to
Engage in Money Laundering”, becoming a martyr almost immediately within
the cannabis movement. The FBI and DEA made it very clear in arresting and
locking Marc up that they were politically motivated. Marc was the first
Canadian to be extradited for a victimless crime in what was tantamount to
being a political prisoner.
